I'm Damien Waugh, and I write character-first grimdark fantasy from Australia. Revenge Runs Red releases September 2026, the first book in a series set in the fractured continent of Aelysia, where the price of every oath is paid in blood and the men who keep the peace are the ones with the most to bury.
It is my first novel in over a decade. My earlier book, The Shadow of Fire (2014), was a traditional epic fantasy: princes, skin-changers, an emperor in the east. The kind of book I thought I was supposed to write. Revenge Runs Red is the one I had to write. You'll find that book, and everything I publish next, on my Amazon author page.
I came to the genre through Tolkien and stayed for Mark Lawrence, George R.R. Martin, and the Witcher games. My touchstones run wider than the shelf: Frank Miller's hard-edged register, the kinetic pulse Matthew Reilly brought to Australian thriller writing, and a lifetime of military history I probably read too much of. I write about violence and what it costs the people who do it, not because I think the world is dark, but because I think the cost is the story.
I write mostly between midnight and 2 a.m. I answer my own emails. I always reply.

The man before the war
Every blade in the books was sharpened by something a character once loved. Stakes that feel inherited, not imposed. Interiority before plot.

No clean wins. No tidy endings. The world keeps the receipts. Vengeance is what survives when grief gets organised.
Lived-in worlds
Maps that show economics, not just battles. Magic with a price. A continent that reads like it existed long before anyone wrote it down.
